THE MARIN SUNRISE TIMES

www.marinsunrise.org

July 16th, 2008

President Bill Cope called our meeting to order at 7:15 am.  Cob Blake was the greeter and led the Pledge.

INSPIRATIONS:

·          Life is not measured by the breath we take, but by when something takes our breath away.  George Carlin

·         You know who the real patriots are in this country? They are the ones who don’t speak English, who don’t have a job, who sometimes lie in the streets, but who will tell you that their life here is infinitely better than where they came from. Paul Limery

GUESTS:  Greg Kennett – guest of Greg Christie

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

·         The Annual Rotaplast Bocce Ball Tournament will be held on August 19th.  Call Captain Cobb Blake to join the team.

·         Renée Hamilton presented the flag of the Jordan River Club

GOOD TIMES:  Dr. Earl Johnson – Finemaster

·         Cobb Blake acknowledged the help of Patricia O’Brien on his refinance.

·         Dr. Mike and Dee Osborne took their grandkids to Mount Lassen in their RV.  They explored a lava tube and learned a little natural science in the process.  There was some smoke near Clear Lake, but otherwise all went well.

·         Marlyn and Larry McClaskey flew to the International Convention in LA and continued on to Mariposa and the NCA.  She reported a lot of smoke in the Lake Shasta area.

SPEAKER: Al Borro - Mayor of San Rafael

The City of San Rafael is currently in good shape.  However, although the budget is balanced at $60 million, with the state in trouble, some of the money the city expects might not be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, a  “Green Ribbon” Committee has been formed and is hard at work.  A new green building is in the works, and San Rafael is working toward becoming a part of the Marin Clean Energy initiative.

Downtown San Rafael is experiencing resurgence.  Fourth Street has been replanted with trees that are better suited for an urban sidewalk area.   Northgate Shopping Center is about to be refurbished, and new businesses in the area include an Audi/VW dealership and a new Target.

In addition to his responsibilities to the city, Mayor Borro is working on SMART and the Golden Gate Transportation District, two important organizations dealing with the future of Marin—both, as we know, major magnets for controversy.
